Kazakhstan didn't announce official plans to host nuclear fuel bank, IAEA

ASTANA. May 18. KAZINFORM /Aigul Tulekbayeva/ “The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has not received an official announcement of Kazakhstan about hosting the nuclear fuel bank on its territory”, Director of The Division of Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Waste Technology of the IAEA Hans Forsstrem said.“The IAEA considers project of creation of the international bank of fortified nuclear material and we have heard that Kazakhstan considers the proposal issue to host the bank on its territory. But as of today Kazakhstan has not officially addressed to the IAEA with this issue. If we receive such a proposal, it will receive our immediate attention”, he said at the International Conference on the issues of rehabilitation of territories contaminated with radioactive materials, held by the Kazakh Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in Astana. Head of the Committee of Atomic Energy of Kazakhstan's Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Timur Zhantikin informed that the issue of placing the nuclear fuel bank on the country's is on the stage of elaboration. According to him, the placement of the bank must be connected with definite technological possibilities of the country. The fact that Kazakhstan plays important role in the issue of non-proliferation of nuclear arms can be considered in favor of the country. Besides, we possessed a well-developed nuclear industry. According to T.Zhantikin, the project will not affect the environment. He noted that the bank will contain not the fuel itself, but primary goods for its production. “If the project is realized here, the environmental impact assessment will be obligatory condition”, he noted. “Technical details are being elaborated now. This is not a commercial project, but the industrial income will be significant”, T.Zhantikin said.
