Kazatomprom and two Korean companies to develop joint coop program

ALMATY. 24.04.2010. KAZINFORM /Daniyar Sikhimbayev/ A workshop on the issues of nuclear fuel cycle has been held in Almaty today. The results of the visit of leaders of "Kazatomprom" National Atomic Company to Korea were discussed at the workshop. The visit was held within the official visit of the Kazakh President to Korea. According to Chairman of the board of Kazatomprom Vladimir Shkolnik, memo on joint activities between Kazatomprom and two biggest Korean companies was signed within the visit. The first of them is KORES (Korean Resources Corporation) that mines mineral raw materials including uranium all over the world. The second - Korea Electric Power Corporation - operates 25 nuclear stations, constructs eight nuclear stations, plans to build 11 more nuclear stations in its country and won a tender or construction of four stations in the United Arab Emirates. "A large amount of resources is necessary for realization of such big program in Korea. In this regard Korean companies diversify the resources of uranium supply and buy it in Africa, Australia, Canada. Kazakhstan is one of the leading uranium suppliers in the world. We agreed to prepare the cooperation program between our companies in the nearest future. We will work on exploration of new fields and organization of production in Kazakhstan as well as organization of production of the nuclear fuel for Korean nuclear companies", V.Shkolnik said. "This will promote creation of new jobs, development of new technologies. This is an important document signed with participation of the President of two states. In accordance with this document we must submit the draft joint program for consideration of the Heads of two states in autumn", the Head of Kazatomprom said.
