In recent years he worked as Director of the Kazakhstan Institute of Oil and Gas. In 1998 - 2000 S. Burkitbaev held the post of the Minister of Transport and Communications of Kazakhstan. In 1993 - 1998 he was the chairman of Almaty engineering center on laser technology, the Kazakhstan radio engineering factory, the chairman of Kazinformtelecom Company, Kazakhstan Telecommunications Company, and Kazakhtelecom Company. In 1984 - 1993 he worked in the Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan.
