The Union of Food Products Producers of Kazakhstan: the Axis of Cooperation

The Union of Food Products Producers of Kazakhstan (UFPPK) was founded in 1997. It unifies Kazakhstan’s leading food and processing industry enterprises. The General Director of the Rakhat Company, Anatoly Popelyushko, is the President of the UFPPK. The active UFPPK members are the Kazakhstani companies Rakhat, Tagam, Nazik, Almaty Technological University, VITA, Hamle, the Ust Kamenogorsk Brewery, Istok and Asar.

The primary goal of the union is protecting the interests of domestic producers and promoting the development of the food business. It actively co-operates with the Parliament, when working out the basic legal statements in this area. Many proposals have become the norms of the law. The UFPPK has greatly contributed to the recovery and development of this industry, thus getting into the history of Kazakhstan, facilitating the economy development, and strengthening the authority of domestic products on the international market.

Business meetings and singing of agreements usually proceed during the international exhibitions, The Sweets, Sharap, and the Grocery Market of Kazakhstan, held by the UFPPK under the guidance of the Kazakh Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Industry and Trade, and Almaty and Astana municipalities. In addition to these exhibitions, the forthcoming year will see the First Kazakhstan International Exhibition called “Equipment, Containers, and Package 2004”, to be held in Almaty on 14-16th April. More than 150 companies will participate, including those from Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, Germany, Israel, Poland, Malaysia, the Czech Republic and Turkey.

The UFPPK is the instigator of many discussions on rehabilitation of beef, dairy, fruit-and-vegetable industries, and development of a cereal market. The guests at these events are the representatives of ministries, akimates (local administrative bodies), banks, large firms and companies, and research institutes.

The Union also organizes various conferences and seminars. In 2003, it held a series of seminars on Modern Management Methods on the Basis of International Standards of ISO 9000:2000 series, HACCP, and the development and introduction of Quality Management System. The participants were taught the basics of quality management, food safety, and staff motivation systems.

The contacts with foreign trade organizations which intend to work on the Kazakh market have broadened recently. A seminar on “Business Strategy and Control under Growing Global Competition: the Key to Survival and Prosperity of Your Company on the Market” took place in the conference hall of Kazakhstan Hotel in June 2003. The seminar was organized by the Kazakh Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Japan External Trade Organization, the UFPPK, and the KazInvest Company.

The UFPPK issues a research and practical magazine The Food Industry of Kazakhstan, the only magazine of that kind in the country. The magazine publishes interviews with large producers, leading experts and researchers, businesspeople and lawyers. The regular columns are Healthy Food – Healthy Nation, International Standards, New Technologies, The Agroindustrial Associations of Kazakhstan, Problems and Views, Analysis and Opinions, and other.

The 21st century is the age of active, determined and knowledgeable entrepreneurs. The UFPPK is trying hard to facilitate the growth and development of the food processing industry, one of the promising industries in the economy of Kazakhstan.

The UFPPK is ready to co-operate with companies and public organizations of Kazakhstan, the CIS and foreign countries.
